History

Quenton and Elizabeth Harflett took over the Bug and Spider in October 1997. At the time the pub was called 'The Bricklayers Arms' and was in need of a total refurbishment.

Records show that there has been an hostelry on the site since the 16th century, although the existing building is only some 200 years old. As a grade 2 listed property all the recent alterations have been designed and built with this in mind. The first phase was to bring the building up to modern standards. Little modern conveniences like inside toilets gave the locals a chance to celebrate!

By mid 1998 the first phase was completed and in late 1998 a second phase which featured a conservatory restaurant was started and was in operation by early 1999. In May 2003 the foundations for the hotel accomodation were laid and the first 5 bedrooms were occupied in mid December 2003.

Quenton and Elizabeth welcome old and new customers and hope that our web-site allows you the opportunity to gauge how a listed building can have some of the most up to date and homely facilities whilst keeping its character.
